  • Screen Resolution / Aspect Ratios in PAL?

Posted by Alex Kuzelicki on December 12, 2005 at 8:45 am

    Hi,
I’m about to make an animation (on my computer) that will have final output in PAL DV.
I’m a bit confused over aspect ratios, screen resolutions and square/non-square pixels. Hopefully, someone will be able to speak in laymen’s terms (even idiot’s terms) so I can understand. Just pretend I’m a kid… or an idiot, whichever most entertains.
    I’m just not getting it.
I know computers have square pixels and DV monitors have rectangular pixels, so it makes sense that something I draw on a computer will be ‘stretched out’. Someone suggested that I draw my animation at 768 x 576 which will come out fine at 720 x 576. I’m sure they’re right BUT that seems illogical to me, because won’t my drawing be even more ‘stretched out’? Ie. I’m drawing ‘wider’ already?
Just don’t get it, and haven’t been able to find a decent (non-tech speak) explanation.
Would especially LOVE IT, if someone could explain what PAL ratio to draw/animate on originally for 4:3 output (720 x 576) AND 16:9 (1280 x 720) output from Final Cut Pro.
Hope someone set me straight. Thanks kindly in advance.
    Regards,
    ALEX KUZELICKI

    Alex,
did you get any answers to this post?

    Are you still unsure?

What drawing applications are you using?

    cheers,
    Neil.
