  AE video quality loss

  Hi everyone,

  I’ve been having problems with the quality of my .mov files in AE. I’ve been exporting footage uncompressed from Final Cut into AE and anytime I import footage into AE, the clips instantly seem noisy and grainy. My fellow co-workers and I thought it was a codec issue but everything on both ends is exactly the same, at least as far as we can tell (DV/DVCPRO NTSC, 720×480, 29.97). And any theory we have doesn’t make sense because the footage looks great by itself anywhere outside of AE. Is there something we’re missing in AE, FCP or both?

  There are many issues going to/from FCP and AE. I would suggest exporting the Quicktimes from FCP as Animation or Uncompressed 8-bit. Many, many people (myself included) have reported problems with exporting QT files in native format from FCP. Most of the time it involves a gamma shift.

  You may also want to try going to the AE project settings (File:Project Settings…) and check “Match Legacy After Effects Quicktime Gamma Adjustments.” Some people have reported better results with that enabled.
