RAM Preview NOT Realtime (on 8 Core w/16gigs Ram)

No AudioAs perviously stated, I’m on a brand new 8-Core Mac Pro with 16 gigs of ram. There is absolutely no reason this shouldn’t be playing back a Ram preview Real Time. yet it defies me lol.
Is this a reinstall case?

if you are hitting zero on the numbers pad to create a ram preview there is little reason you shouldn’t get realtime playback… if you are hitting space bar to create a standard preview, then your playback is limited by the data rate of your hard drive.
one thing that can effect playback of ram previews is external video monitoring… i know with my decklink card, there are settings that won’t allow realtime playback of ram previews when working with some comp sizes/aspect ratios, unless i tweak the settings. if you think that is the problem, try disabling video previewing to anything but the computer monitor (preferences>video preview) and do a ram preview.
if it helps, then you will need to find settings that work for your video preview hardware and your typical comp setup — with my decklink card, it is often easy to fix by setting the preview to ‘faster’ rather than ‘more accurate’ or making sure the aspect ratio matches the comp…

Well it’s a RAM preview (not space bar)
I forgot to mention that the machine has successfully played back previews before in RAM at real time. Just all of a sudden it stopped. And no, i don’t have any external video monitoring.
I think i’m just going to re-install

your preview isn’t set to use opengl ‘always’ is it? at the bottom of the preview window is a little icon with a lightning bolt, it a preview accleration menu. make sure that it is not set to opengl always on, personally, i’d set it to adaptive resoultion, but it would be ok to have it set to opengl interactive.
also, before reinstalling, try moving the preference folder to the desktop… you’ll find it in users/[username]/library/preferences/adobe/after effects, it the folder named ‘8.0’. just move the whole folder to the desktop, this will reset ae to all it’s default settings. restart ae and see if you have the problem.

its just removing the preference file (or the entire folder containing the pref files for ae)…
they can sometimes become corrupt and by removing them ae is forced to recreate them the next time it launches… if you want to force ae to recreate the main pref file, you can also, make a modification to an after effects preference (like gird, or something minor). that will force ae to save the main pref file, essentially creating a new version of it. sometimes, though, there are other files in that folder that are bad, so by removing the whole folder, you can make sure that everything is fresh…
it’s surprising how many of after effect’s odd behaviors that just suddenly occur can be fixed by removing the preference files or rebooting the machine… when something unexplained pops up, those are 2 things to try early on in troubleshooting the issue.

The truth is, it generally fixes something because the user has changed a setting and can’t figure out what has happened. Resetting the prefs puts everything back to default.
In this case, maybe he changed his real time preview codec to something that isn’t going to playback in real time no matter what system.
Corruption is pretty seldom in my experience. In the last 12 years I think I’ve never trashed my AE prefs. Maybe FCP prefs once or twice.

Yeah, but changing a setting whether accidentally or on purpose and forgetting does not a corrupt file make. It’s just user error. AND yes, trashing prefs will fix the problem. But it doesn’t mean there was anything wrong with the user prefs.

sorry, bret, i was agreeing with you. it was an attempt at humor, and my winking smiley didn’t pull it off too well…
we used to share more systems here, and i would often trash prefs to undo a co-worker’s tinkering with settings…
