  codec best for bulk dvd rip?

  I want to rip dvds of my own videos probably using MPEG Streamclip. (these dvds are effectively new masters) This is part of a migration strategy I’m doing as the videotape to dvd x-fers represented here are about 7 years old… so this is a hedge against data corruption. I might just copy the TS_folders to hard drives but I’d also like to have Quicktimes too archived to the drives. Without a long recompress, is there a codec that would well mirror the quality of the dvd, extract/save pretty quickly and not introduce new (or with a lightest touch) compression artifacts?

  I used to extract to DV but this was just based on a hunch. Input very welcome

  Perhaps covert to ProResLT Standard Definition as these are DVDs.

  Hi Paul,

  It’s been a few years since I ripped a DVD with MPEG Streamclip, but I believe it can be configured to pull the original .m2v and .ac3 assets back out which should be “lossless” versus doing a transcode to something else.

  I had used that method when DVD menus needing changing and the original video was no longer available – pulled out the original parts and re-authored again with those assets.
