  The Next Industry Codec Standard

  Hey Everyone,

  Just was wondering on your thoughts regarding the next industry codec standard. I am a video editor working on a Mac (10.8.5) running Premiere 6 and ProRes seems to be my current standard for receiving and sending files. I recently worked with a compositor who works on a PC and he was unable to send me ProRes easily. We ended up using Animation files, which were huge.

  So, is the industry moving toward H264 / H265, Quicktime movies for exporting and transferring of files between editing and compositing?

  No. They are delivery codecs or, in some cases with H.264, an acquisition codec which can be handled for editing (although many would recommend avoiding that) but I seriously avoid for compositing.

  I’m not sure why someone would have difficulty delivering ProRes.
  On Windows, CineMartin Cinec encodes to ProRes and is fairly inexpensive.

  He could have sent you DNxHD though if he couldn’t encode to ProRes. Those two codecs cover nearly all commonly used NLEs.
