  Best Video Compression Settings for Self-Hosted Amazon s3/ Amazon Cloud video hosting?

  I am creating a website with video tutorials. I will be hosting them on Amazon s3 (actually Amazon Cloud).

  Since I will be paying for every video watched I want to have the best quality at the lowest file size. The original videos will be 1080p 29.97 fps. I want to encode them to either 640×360 or 854×480.

  I want to use MP4 h.264 with audio at 128. But I don’t know what the video encoding should be set at.

  I have always used Youtube to host all my videos before. I would encode at a high bitrate and then Youtube re-encodes the videos.

  For example: I just uploaded a 1080p 1 minute video and youtube encoded several versions.
  Youtube 360 re-encoded information:
  Type: MP4 h.264
  Length: 60 seconds
  Size: 640 x 360
  Data Rate: 526kbps
  Total bitrate: 622kbps
  Frame rate: 29.97
  Audio bit rate: 96kbps (stereo)
  Audio sample rate: 44 kHz
  Total Video size: 4.47 MB (4,696,642 bytes)

  Youtube 480 re-encoded information:
  Type: FLV
  Length: 60 seconds
  Size: 640 x 360
  Total Video Size: 6.46 MB (6,784,920 bytes)

  Questions:
  1. The Youtube 360p re-encoded video quality is not perfect but functional, but 480p is slightly better. I would prefer to encode in 480p MP4 h.264. What encoding settings or compression setting should I use to maximize quality and size?

  I own CS6 and use Adobe Media Encoder, but I know there are other good encoders/compressors. What encoder do you use and what settings to you recommend to maximize encoding for video streaming?

  2. Any recommendations/tips/tweaks to optimize video streaming for Amazon S3/Cloud hosting?
