  converting vts files to mov

  Hi:
  I am creating video files on a hard rive from old archive dvd’s.
  When I rip the DVD I get the VTS files….

  But then when I use TOAST to make the .mov files, I can choose
  the aspect ratio I want for the new mov files.

  There is a default file size (ratio) that TOAST offers… but
  I can also choose another file size from the dropdown menu.

  Some files come from old digibeta shoots (SD), some from higher-res shoots. But we don’t have any info on the original file size.

  What would people recommend for the pixel count for the new mov file?

  John,

  I’m not clear with what you’re asking.

  All video (in NTSC) on a DVD is 720×480.

  If the ‘4×3′ bit is flipped, QuickTime will auto correct to square pixels and it’ll look correct.
  If the ’16×9’ bit is flipped, QuickTime will auto correct to square pixels and it’ll look correct

  It doesn’t matter. Everything has been dumbed down to 720×480 on an SD NTSC DVD.

  If you’re asking what the ‘square’ pixel sizes, it’s 640×480 for 4×3 and 640 x 360 for 16×9.

  Technically there are a couple of other ways this can be handled.

  Last, I’m hoping you’re not going to edit further with any of this video. If you ‘have to’ because of a clients needs, then I suggest Adobe Premiere Pro which allows editorial from .VOB files.

  one follow up question:
  when VTS files are converted to a QT file –
  Mpeg-4 is a default for a lot of programs
  – is it generally best to go with Mpeg-4 from VTS
  or to DV/DVCPRO?

  It’s all about what you’re trying to do with it.

  If you have a MPEG2 VTS (usual a VOB on a DVD) and you want to:

  • Edit with it? – pick an editorial tool than handles raw VOBs like Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Edit with something that doesn’t handle VOBs? Transcode to ProRes (OSX), DNxHD or Cineform
  • Send it to youtube? an h.264 MPEG4 is excellent (at a large bitrate)

  Each end use dictates what you should do.
