  Gamma

  I know this has been asked quite a few times but I dont think I ever found the right answer…

  When converting a file from a Cannon 5D H.264 to ProRes. Why does the image get darker?

  I understand that there is a gamma shift when doing this conversion and I wanted to know if there are any side effects if one is to change the gamma in compressor from 1.00 to .70?

  When I do this, it brings the image back up to a nice bright color.

  However, I’m worried that by doing so I might be lossing information that will be critical in the color creation stage of the cut.

  Any thoughts?

  The issue many face is that heavily compressed H.264 (AVCHD) has relatively limited room for color grading before various artifacts become visible. A setting was recently released for Canon DSLRs which would result in a “flat” recording allowing for a little more “wiggle room” for grading.
