  Good Compression / Encoding literature

  Just finished DVD Demystified and was shocked by how much i enjoyed it. I encode video professionally but realized that my lack of a deep understanding of how the formats work was hindering me being able to actively problem solve when I run into trouble.

  So I mostly work with H.264 and MPEG-2 for DVD-Video. The MPEG-2 thing… it’s been annoying me for a while. Can’t seem to get DVDs to look how i want them.

  So what books would you recommend that will help me better understand compression (of those two formats) with an eye toward practical application of the theory to improve my encodes?

  Andres, I am a total newbie but I just got through Ben Waggoner\’s \”Compression for Great Video and Audio\” and found it very helpful. He starts from first principles of compression, then moves into codec specifics. Hope that helps.
