  Number of encoding jobs per computer – Sorenson Squeeze 7 and ProCoder 3

  I am new to the video world and am looking for a high-quality encoder to convert DV to MPEG-2 for DVD authoring (and perhaps eventually to other formats). In Ben Waggoner’s book “Compression for Great Video and Audio”, he mentions that MPEG-2 encoding can be done faster than real-time (i.e., two hours of video = less than two hours of encoding time) on today’s computers.

  Assuming this is true, how many encoding jobs (with either Sorenson Squeeze or ProCoder) can I run on a dedicated “encoding server” without impacting performance too heavily (let’s say a quad-core i7)? Can I encode one file per core (somewhere on Sorenson’s website, they mention 1.5 jobs per core)? Or just one file per computer? Is there a big performance difference in Squeeze vs. ProCoder in this type of environment?

  I’ve read that using Xeon or i7 may not make much difference, but has anyone else had a different experience?

  I am looking at a high throughput environment where we are trying to capture video, preprocess, encode, and burn as efficiently as possible. Thanks in advance.
