Compress/Convert to be small enough for emailing.
Hi Everyone,
I have purchased a 2010 6 core Mac Pro with Snow Leopard and FCP 7.03 I’m capturing video as .mov and want to convert/export the final sequence out as either something that Quicktime or Windows Media Player can play BUT it has to be small enough that I can send it via email.
We do packs 2-5 minutes long, SD and on tape. When I work from home I like to send my Manager the pack via email so then she can watch it and ask for me to change a thing or two before I roll it out to tape. So yes, I’m probably different than most people on here who may want the fastest or highest quality export/conversion whereas I just want to be able to make it ‘fit’ into an email.
These are locked down IT machines and they’ve added a quicktime player to our desktop and I can go that route, but honestly wmp has been working best for all of these years.
In any case I tried to use Compressor and do a test export but I believe it turned out to be a .m4u file(?), and regardless it was too large to send even by my hotmail account which allows larger attachments than here.
So, is there a simple way that I can ‘lower the quality’ enough so that I can send her a 4-5 minute pack so that we can go back and forth via email?

Why would you send files by email? They’d generally be so heavily compressed as to be near useless for client approval. There are any number of free services like YouSendIt in which you can send larger files by a download link. I send files using my MobileMe iDisk account. You can even password protected Vimeo video and allow download or they can view online.

There is a nice webservice called The Library that I can recommend. You upload your original file to your Library and then send it out as a download link or as a webpreview from there. You are also able to do encodings straight out from the web interface. Very useful tool. Bad thing is that it’s not free of charge.

We use Flip4Mac to create smaller WMVs for emailing. Outside of 3 minutes you are looking at a very compressed file. We keep them around 512 x 288 frame size. You have to keep the final encoded file around 7 megs so it will fit in a 10 meg mailbox.

YouTube videos can be made “private“.

People do need a YouTube account to watch it though.
Alternatively, you can set them to “unlisted“.

I highly endorse the upload and set to private feature of youtube, or for a more robust solution, look into WireDrive.
If you still want a downloadable file with a password, I believe Sorenson still has this ability. It encodes and give you a passkey. That passkey is needed to then open the file. I haven’t used this in years, but I understand some mix stages here in Hollywood still use it for as-yet-to-be-released movie files for dub stages.

I mentioned before that Vimeo allows you to password protect a video. Unlike YouTube, viewers do not need a Vimeo account, there’s no 50 person limit (all of whom must have YouTube accounts) and there’s no 15 minute duration limit for the video that YouTube has. Exposure Room also has privacy features which are better than YouTube I believe.
