  Data Rate (BitRate) Calc Favorites

  I thought it would be useful to post a list of favorite Data Rate Calculators since so many people are asking about things that are ultimately related to data rate and file size.

  These are all free

  AJA DataRate Calculator
  https://www.aja.com/products/software/
  Calculates data rates for nearly all major video codecs.
  Scroll down the page a bit.
  Mac, Windows, iOS version.

  Bitrate Pro Widget
  https://www.pimley.net/projects/
  Ultimately bit rage calculator. Plug in any two numbers and it’ll get you the third amongst duration, size, data rate. You can even select between binary and decimal based file sizes.

  Click on Free Tools button. I can’t provide the direct link because it’s a Flash based website. Remind me why I hate Flash based websites. It’s an Adobe Air based application so you must install Adobe Air as well. It allows you to enter any flash compatible codec (H.264, On2VP6, Sorenson Spark) and whatever paramaters including the complexity of the scene and speed of the motion. It reports on “grid quality” (how the frame size fits into 4, 8, 16 blocks), connection speed and CPU needed for good playback from the web). BTW this is actually the improved downloadable version of the one that used to be a sticky at the top of this forum.

  It just converts bits to bytes including Kilo, Mega, Giga, Tera. It’s a must have for those confused by such conversions.

  Bits Per Pixel

  Bits per Pixel is an important quantitive measure of quality. There are certainly other factors as most codecs are more efficient at higher data rates but it will help if you need to maintain a given quality at various data rates and frame sizes.

  Bitrate Starter online older version

  The online version of the aforementioned Bitrate Starter but it’s not as good as the download version. This is the one that used to be a sticky at the top of the forum. I’m posting this in case you don’t want to install Adobe Air. The download version is much better as it includes H.264 profiles and other details.

  Online only. It states it’s for Flash but it’s important to understand most codecs work this way such that frame sizes divisible by 16 are better than 8 are better than 4 as far as how the codec handles them and the resultant quality.

  There are scores of other online bit rate calculators but I want to focus on what you can download (unless there was no other option). The above should cover nearly all your bit rate calculator needs.
