horrible x264 quality
Could anyone help to explain why my video, encoded to x264, always looks so crappy/boxy? It always loses its color in when uploaded to youtube in standard quality. I’ve tried all other codecs like xvid and wmv but none prevail.

I envy those who get good quality on youtube’s 360p while I get shit quality.

Your links go to creative cow pages, not to videos. But generally, the only thing you can do to improve YouTube quality is give them extremely high-quality source files. Virtually everything uploaded to YouTube will get re-encoded. They process tens if not hundreds of thousands of video files each day and I can assure you their encoding is automated and likely doesn’t examine each file to determine whether it needs to be re-encoded or not.
YouTube will accept almost any file-format/codec combination and I believe accepts files as large as 2GB. I personally think it’s overkill to give them files that large, but it does help to give them source files in their native resolution compressed at high quality, say with mp4 or MPEG2.

EDIT: watch them on youtube, not here, and you’ll see the diff. 🙂Compare the two videos and you’ll see. I encode uncompressed avi’s at a resolution of 1280×720, from sony vegas pro 8.0, into x264 using megui at a bitrate of 10000 which already quite high and still I get crappy quality unlike the others do. (One time I even tried compressing them into x264 with a bitrate of 30000.) I’ve also tried compressing and uploading the source file, unedited, to youtube but still no luck.
It seems like I’m the only one who keeps getting horrible x264 quality as I’ve compared to most x264 encoded youtube videos that others make. My videos lose a lot of color and a gets very boxy when played in 360p.
I’ve been getting this problem ever since I started editing and have gone to the point of desperation to get this fixed. (sleepless nights bro…)
I tried encoding with my friend’s computer and still nothing. The same boxy, crappy video I always get.
I’d gladly appreciate it if you could really really help point out to me what I’m doing wrong.

Both videos looked fantastic played on YouTube from where I’m sitting. No color loss, virtually no compression articfacts. There was some softening but that’s to be expected.
I’m not seeing what you’re describing. Are you sure you don’t have some low quality setting turned on in YouTube or have an old, outdated version of Flash Player installed for your browser?
