MPEG Streamclip – Fixing Timecode Errors
We are currently ripping and re-encoding to MP4 a large number of DVDs provided to us by studios and record labels that will be streamed online. We have been ripping using Mac The Ripper and then using Handbrake to create the MP4s (we have been doing this in 2 stages as we want to keep a disk image as backup) and for the vast majority this has worked just fine
For a small number we noticed the audio going out of sync, which we fixed by trimming the VOBs in MPEG Streamclip prior to Handbraking. We had a problem with a handful of them where MPEG Streamclip wouldn’t trim them because there were timecode errors, but we resolved that easily by asking MPEG Streamclip to fix them
But we’re now left with 3 disks for which MPEG Streamclip can’t fix the timecode errors. It gets 99% of the way through and then says “Error: can’t read the next timecode”
If you click on “check stream” in the log window it shows the message “Error: can’t find the last audio sample”
If you compare the stream info for a successful conversion and one of these problem files the only differences seem to be that the latter show a duration of “0:00:00” and a bit rate of “0.00 Mbps?” From that error message it looks like there’s something funny going on with the audio but under “stream info” all the format, bitrate, frequency etc info looks right
Anyone experienced anything similar and managed to fix it?
