BMP codec in video
Hi all,
I just received a short documentary video made by a non-tech, low budget artist. What I got was an .avi file with BMP(according to Streamclip) or WRAW (according to QT) compression. Online I could not find any information about any of the two in connection with video.
Does anyone know where I could get some reliable information about this?Thank you

BMP is a Microsoft Bit Map Picture/graphic and totally unsuitable for video.

You need to transcode it to something else, if you can.

It might be a Blackmagic codec. Do a search for blackmagic codecs on google…or go to Blackmagic’s site and download any of their driver packs. Their site will ask for a serial number but just leave it blank and you can still download. Then install the drivers (it won’t install the drivers if you don’t have hardware), and it will install the codecs. Then see if you can play or work with the file.

Thank you for your replies.
I did check Wikipedia, but the whole article relates mostly to still pictures, at least as far as I could understand the “lingo”.
I don’t have a problem opening the file both in QT, FCP or Streamclip. And in Streamclip I then found out was a codec called apple BMP. I guess what I wanted to know is if there are any issues when editing or reencoding streams in this format.
But I guess not many people use it at all.All the best!

It’s not.
If you had googled for ‘Blackmagic BMP’ you will have seen the first result being from the Blackmagic site
“….Decklink Cards support:
“Windows Bitmap (BMP) image sequences”
If you had searched for WRAW you would have found
“(BMP) raw ‘WRAW’ In other word a RAW or uncompressed AVI”
The OP even pointed out “video made by a non-tech, low budget artist.” They are hardly going to have a Blackmagic card are they!

This is a highly uncompressed format so it will look great but i don’t know how easy or difficult it is to play back in editing software.
