I’m running Compressor 3.0.5 with the full version of Flip4Mac and Sorenson 4.5. I can outpur WMA Pro 9, but don’t have the option for version 10. Is this possible to do on a Mac since Microsoft isn’t supporting any future release of Windows Media Player after 10?

Flip4Mac only has WMP Pro 9 audio. I’m not sure why you’re asking about 10 though.

Windows Media Player up to 11 on WIndows so I’m not sure what your intent is hear. Certainly Silverlight is what they’re pushing as a browser plugin but that’s not a desktop player though. I think it’ll be some time before every WMV is embedded in a Silverlight player.

I’m not sure what, if any, the difference is. A client has (for once) given very specific output instructions and have requested one output be encoded with WMV9 and WMA10. Can you even encode the video of the movie with v9 and the audio with v10?

Absolutely but not on the Mac. If they can explain why the MUST have 10 Pro rather than 9 Pro I can contact Telestream (Flip4Mac developers) with the request and see what they can do.

10 Pro has very specific features

If you scroll down you’ll what 9 Pro supports as well.

This should also help explain the differences between 9 Pro and 10 Pro

Current Windows Media Player is 11 though.

    Great. Thanks so much Craig.

I’ll check into their reasoning tomorrow when business hours resume and post back. I doubt there is any specific reason.

Thanks for the links as well.

And real quick, if this absolutely what the client needs then I assume the solution would be to dual boot my Mac and run the Windows version of Sorenson?

You may need to double check to see if Squeeze supports WMA 10 Pro even on Windows.

The free Windows Media Encoder does so you might export to a codec that can handle and encode with that if needed.

Sorry, I meant that Microsoft isn’t supporting future releases of Windows Media Player for Mac.

I spoke with a friend running Sorenson on a PC and it does offer WMA 10 Pro encoding.

Does Windows Media Encoder allow for custom settings on bit rates and such or is it only presets?

I read over those articles a few times, but couldn’t really see too much of a reason why one would go with 10 vs. 9 other than efficiency. Are there any other reasons that stand out to you?

    Fairly complete custom setting control.

[Andrew Saliga] ” I read over those articles a few times, but couldn’t really see too much of a reason why one would go with 10 vs. 9 other than efficiency.” That’s the basics. That’s why I ask because in nearly all cases 9 Pro will do just fine and you can do that right now.

Flip4Mac fills that role and they work from Microsoft SDK. It should play the Pro audio formats and it will create 9 Pro. There are files Flip4Mac will play that WMP9Mac can’t. The only “other way around” is WMP9Mac can play Audio 9 Voice codec and F4M can’t. Microsoft has moved away from that codec though.

9 Pro may work for them just fine buy they might be wondering why they see 9 Pro instead of 10 Pro

It looks like I’m locked into outputting with WMA 10 Pro. I spoke with the account exec at the ad agency and she didn’t really know why the client wants version 10 vs. 9, she just said that’s what they need.

Unlikely that they would know any different, but this is for our largest client, so I’ll make sure I get them what they need whatever it takes.

Our animators dual boot their Macs, so while one was at lunch I downloaded the WME to check it out. It looks like it gives me enough options, but I didn’t see the WMA 10 Pro as an option. He came back before I could check for WMP updates, but am I correct in assuming that 10 Pro was absent only because of a needed update? I would have that downloading the latest WME would give me up-to-date codecs.
