Mpeg 2 1024X576
Posted by John Kingman on September 23, 2009 at 5:58 pmGoing a little nuts here. I need to take a .mov file and convert it to an Mpeg 2 with the frame size 1024 X 576. Compression won’t let me, Mpeg streamclip won’t let me make Mpeg2s at all, and Final Cut doesn’t offer it. What to do?

September 23, 2009 at 6:06 pmWhat kind of MPEG-2, Elementary, Program, Transport Stream?
WHY are you using that frame size for MPEG-2? It’s certainly not for DVD or for broadcast. -

September 23, 2009 at 6:38 pmIt’s a trailer submission. They require that it be 1024 X 576 to play on plasma TVs at the festival. They did not specify any particular type of Mpeg2, merely that it be Mpeg2.

September 23, 2009 at 7:12 pmOther than that it looks like they want 16:9, you’t have to ask them.
If they wanted a standard def anamorphic PAL file for DVD that would be 720×576 with anamorphic flag.
I’d have to think they’d want program or transport stream and you have to ask them which. Program stream would usually have .mpg extensions and transport stream would usually be .ts.When you say “Compression” wont let you do that do you mean Apple’s Compressor?
Have you tried using your 16:9 source using Apple’s MPEG-2 Program Stream preset?
You want be able to adjust anything other that Source Inset Cropping but it should automatically detect the source aspect ratio and handle it. -

September 23, 2009 at 7:52 pmYes, I did mean Compressor. Clearly the stress is getting to me. 🙂
“Have you tried using your 16:9 source using Apple’s MPEG-2 Program Stream preset?”
Is this part of compressor?
I wrote the festival people. My thought is that a lot of this can be chalked up to not enough options for PAL formats.
Thanks for your help, by the way.

“Depending on the version, yes. Wouldn’t that be the first place to look? It’s a preset. I would assume you asked here because you already tried and failed. In the time we’ve gone back and forth you could have found and tested the preset. It’s in both Compressor 3.0.x and 3.5.x.
