Hello the Cow.
Little bug that i can t figure out !
I m trying to convert some video i shot with panasonic hvx200 on p2. Now edit and export as a self contain movie with fcp in 720p 30pn. I try to down convert to an apple pro res 4.2.2 or uncompressed 8 bit directly with final cut, or sending to compressor, or with quicktime from the self contain movie. Etheir way, trying to get a apple pro res 4.2.2 , non Hd, ntsc 720/480, letterboxed, 29.97 framerate. Its a 1 min promo i want then to transfert to betacam. It seems to take really to long and to much space. I end up with a nine hour export and some 200 gig of space. any idea ? first time i do this export and i have no ref !

I can’t tell what you’re doing wrong because you’ve given very vague info.
Read the PLEASE READ at the top of this forum and provide all the information.
Your file size is certainly too large for 8BitUncompressed and Apple ProRes Standard Def for a one minute source but I have no clue what you’re actually doing or whether you’re selecting the correct settings.You might have had an answer by now, or at least a troubleshooting methodology if you’d read the PLEASE READ.

so i have a Mac pro 2 X 3 GHZ dual-core intel Xeon with 4 g of Ram, running OS 10.5.6
I m using the fcp studio 2 : compressor 3.0.5
FCP : 6.0.5
quicktime pro : 7.6.0
the source media is dvcpro HD 720p60 (shoot at 30PN with a hvx200a)
out put as a self contain movie directly from FCP as dvcpro HD 720p60
Then i try to compress it to be or prores 4.2.2 or uncompress 8 bit with a ntsc format 4:3 720×480 , letterboxed to keep my nice 16:9 look at 29,97 frame rate.
i ve tried a couple other export and i m know with a 14,64 Gig file of 2:45 min. Exept the frame size, the codec i can see that the bit rate as a huge difference : 59 109 for the original and 762 261 for the export one. The original one is 1.14 gig.
Any idea ? thanks again to help me. I can pay to have it done, but i would really want to understand, cause i m pretty sure i have everything with me to do it properly.

Just as a first step to investigate file size issue, just export the file out of Quicktime Pro 7.6
File/Export/ Export Movie to QuickTime
click Options button
Video Settings
Select Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2Select Size button
Dimensions
Select NTSC 720×480
checkbox Preserve Aspect Ratio
Select Letterbox from pulldownSound
Settings button
Format: Linear PCM -
Exactly what i did Mr, that gave me the best result , but still 14 gig for 2:45 min of Ntsc , that s to much no ?

A one minute uncompressed 8bit NTSC standard definition file should only be about 1.2 GB uncompressed. So at the length your file is ending up (2:45), at most it should only be about 3GB. Since you’re using ProRes, it should be much smaller.
So something has to be wrong in your target output settings. At 14GB it sounds like you’re outputting an HD file.

barthelemy, please watch this. 1080 49 second source to 720×480 Letterbox 8Bit Uncompressed is about 970MB. You can not change the average data rate so, give your file size, you’re doing something wrong.

so i ve done the exact same export on my mac bookpro and it took 3 min and is 3.77 gig, much more what should be expected. I m goanna continu to investigate to know what s wrong with the macpro !

Its exactly what i do, etheir for the uncompressed 8 bit or the prores 4.2.2.

still don t know where is the problem. I m goanna try using my laptop , just to check ?!
