how to make a mareanette or have different layers acting like they’re hanging from a string?

maybe more like a mobile than a mareanette.

2 layers attached to an invisible string, so they both react in real world ways [gravity, relational, etc.], like if string is wiggled at the top, the lower layer moves more than higher.

    Thanks.

I smell http://www.motionscript.com — Dan’s stuff is friggin awesomely handy.

Check out the IK chain scripts, and use some sort of dynamic springy script on the controllers (the ‘controller’ concept will make sense when you build it out….) I think if you used EASE and WHIZZ on the controllers too (https://aescripts.com/) it would really bring life to the comp.

Also, its marionette — i thought this website had spell check.

Joke or not, searching for “marionette” will return many more results than the the OP’s spelling.

But… scripts aren’t really necessary. Simple parenting will link most joints together if you know how to move anchor points. “Hanging from strings” implies spring action, gravity and resilience and those are really tough to do without extensive scripting.

Paper puppets were one of the coolest and most prolific tutorial efforts when parenting was introduced. I’ve still got my AE5 Total Training series of VHS tapes just because the parenting and 3D segments include stuff Brian and his boys have never repeated.

    You see,

thats whats nice about the ‘ease and whizz’ plug, you can animate your keyframes, then add ‘springiness’ to them.

The problem I’ve found with the parenting hand to forearm to shoulder is that it doesn’t move that realistically, and it takes MUCH longer to animate. Motionscript’s IK chain saves a boatload of time animating a single object instead of the entire chain. You invest time into the actual build, and save time in the animation.

But then again David, there is always more than one way to skin a cat, certain people like doing certain things differently. And, of course I googled marionette, i was expecting raunchier image content! What a let down!

“Realistic” when used to describe puppetry is a stylistic decision, but, yes, sophisticated scripting tools would make using the conventional approach of simple parenting seem a bit primitive.
