    We are using 2 different formats for converting to H264, both movies about the same size of 25gb:
    HDV-1440×1080
    XDCAM-1920×1080

    When converting XDCAM to H264, the files are always a smaller file size.

    When converting HDV to H264, the files are almost double the file size. Shouldn’t this be smaller?

    We are using the same source for the converting, meaning HDV to H264(1440×1080), XDCAM (1920×1080).

    We used the default settings. Are we not setting the compressor right? Is this normal?

    Your post does not make complete sense to me, sorry if I’m not getting it.

    Just to clarify;

    You have two source formats, HDV and HDCAM.

    You are encoding both of these to the exact same H.264 output profile.

    The problem that you are having is that the H.264 derived from the HDV source is bigger than the one from XDCAM.

    Do I have that right?

    Ok, I have 2 formats

    HDV convert to H264 at 1440×1080, same as source

    XDCAM convert to H264 at 1920×1080, same as source

    So I have 2 H264 files, one is 1440×1080, the other is 1920×1080. The 1440×1080 file becomes bigger in size than the 1920×1080, in H264

    I hope this makes sense.

    Ok,

    Let’s look at this another way:

    Can you encode 5 minutes of both the HDV and XDCam footage to an single H.264 profile with a frame size of 1920×1080 and a bit rate of 5mb/s

    I bet you that both will come out roughly the same size.

    I’m not sure why you are encoding the HDV to 1440×1080 – We ran through this before is a previous post and you never got back to me…

    So you’re are not encoding to the same H.264 profile then, one is non-square pixel for the HDV material and one is square pixel for the XDCAM?

    Either that or your output is squashed/distorted on your HDV output?

    Whatever, if you’re encoding a defined length of source material to a defined data-rate and a set frame size then both sources will come out roughly the same.

    And just to confirm, you’re delivering 1920×1080 H.264 for web? What sort of data-rate are you using for the H.264?

    sorry about that. The reason why we’re converting to 1440×1080, same as source, is to save time on the conversion in compressor with our G5’s. Our web guys said its ok to convert from that format. Does that make sense? If we’re going from 1440×1080 to 1920×1080, we’re pretty much up converting and convert to H264. They figure they can change that in their end. I don’t know what kind of compression their using or if we are doing this wrong. By the way this is for the web, stand up comedy footage.
