Absolute Best Compression Program for Mac?
Posted by Brian Gench on May 29, 2008 at 5:49 pmRegardless of cost: what is the absolute best compression program for the Mac?
I use Final Cut Studio 2, have a new 8-core Mac with bells & whistles, etc….
Is Compression 3.0 good enough for professional use, or what would be the ideal program to use for compressing from a master QT?
Thank you.

May 29, 2008 at 6:14 pmYou mean Compreesor, right?
Depends on what you want to compress from and to. BitVice still does better MPEG-2 compression than Compressor, CinemaCraft is now available as an expensive plug-in (expensive Hollywood film quality compression plug-in that is). Episode, I think, is the best all around compressor on a Mac (specifically the Pro w/Flash version), although with enough plug-ins, Compressor can be pretty good.

May 29, 2008 at 7:13 pmThank you very much.
Yes, I meant Compressor 3.0. Sorry about that.
I’ve looked into the Cinema Craft encoder, but that’s strictly for high-quality DVD compression, correct?
I’m thinking that Episode would probably be the best way to go. Your most confirmed my belief that it’s the best overall encoder.
Thanks, again!

May 29, 2008 at 7:55 pmYeah, Cinema Craft is for MPEG-2. I mentioned it because, since it’s a plug-in, it’s one way to make Compressor a better all-around tool (albeit at a high price).

June 4, 2008 at 3:07 amI concur on Episode. It’s the best professional compression tool on Mac.
Sorenson Squeeze is also much improved in their new version 5, and I think it’s a lot easier for the novice and non-professional user. I recommend it to educators and other folks for whom compression isn’t a primary job.

June 6, 2008 at 3:52 amSoon I will need to buy an application to compress MPG2.
I was thinking about BitVice. Then they released CinemaCraft. About Episode I have no information.
What would be your advice?
Thanks,
