Does anyone know what the difference between ‘encoded bounds’ and ‘display bounds’ is (as shown in Apple Compressor 3.0)? I am compressing a 720×486 quicktime, exported by Final Cut Pro 6, as an mpeg2. When I open the resulting file in quicktime and get the movie properties, it list the file as 640×480, even though I encoded it as 720×480. When I import the file into After Effects, it verifies that it is indeed 720×480. When I import it back into Compressor and look at the properties, it says the ‘encoded bounds’ are 720×480, but the ‘display bounds’ are 640×480. In fact, when I look at the original quicktime before I compress it, it shows the ‘encoded bounds’ are 720×486 but the ‘display bounds’ are 640×486.

My question is, WTF? Does this have to do with pixel aspect, or is there something else I am missing?
