Getting some great results from the h264 codec, but notice that it is getting field order mixed up pretty regularly (with both upper and lower dominant source material). This can be fixed by switching the field order over from automatic to custom (I’m using Compressor), but this results in render times that make you weep (you know it’s bad when you get in the next day and it’s STILL rendering).

Anyone come across this field issue and worked out a better way of dealing with it?

    Apple’s H.264 implementation doesn’t support fields – it’s progressive only.

So does that mean that I need to deinterlace any interlaced material before I encode?

    Yes, if you’re using Apple’s H.264.
