    First off, I use Adobe After Effects CS3 v. 8.0.2.27, my system specs are MacBook Pro 2.5Ghz OSX Leopard, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512MB. I’ve noticed that my renders even under best settings with animation compression on best always output a video that looks more pixelated and lower quality than the original source footage. I recently ran a test and rendered the comp (which is the same ratio/scale/resolution as the imported footage) with absolutely no compression and with the highest possible setting. The end result was still a render where the video was of a lower quality than the original video. I’m wondering what could be the cause for this, and how to fix it. Thank you.

    how are you viewing it back? pixel aspect ratio correction off in AE view or high quality playback in quicktime selected are first bets. Alpha channel exported too, if any?

    I’m playing the render in quicktime at high quality. I also just realized something. There’s absolutely no difference between my renders when I render at draft settings and render at best settings. in fact, when I’m lookin at the comp in after effects, my draft and best quality views look identical

    hrm, I may have found the problem. whenever I import footage, it downgrades the image quality. I do not know why.

    You might have exported with interpret fields off from an interlaced source which forces AE to do a low quality deinterlace.
