    Hello all!
    Hi!

    I would like to know how this kind of texture animation was made.

    For what I see, I think he used photoshop (or Illustrator) for the patterns, am I right? or is this doable in c4d?

    I’m interesting not only in the lines pattern but in the cirles ones. The big one on the top right was made using a sphere, right? How about the one with the yellow dot that expand and then appears 3 dots? Is it possible to do c4d? Or was it made in AE and exported a .mov file to the textures?

    If anyone know how to do something like that I would appreciate all the tips and advices. It’s really important!

    From the looks of things that’s probably modelled. Each color seems to have a rad on it and then a deep chasm between it and the next object – even the diagonal half rectangles. And that would keep it all in C4d to animate locally. You could do it with textures with a deformer channel but I think in this case it’s all geometry with selections colored by different materals.

    Ok that’s not quite accurate – the stripes can be done with the gradient tool or the tile shader or the checkerboard shader.

    I’ve been struggling with the yellow dot increasing during the animation and with the other 3 dots appearing as well. Do you have any ideia?

    Spheres are terrific things – you can stick em just below the surface, flattened in the Y and then scale them up and they will poke through the surface with either an elipse or circular profile . A little Ambeint occlusion to get some shadow into the interface between sphere and surface and that should do it.

    Actually I think (after looking again) they may just be lathed objects with a really shallow arc. A circle won’t flatten quite that way.

    I didn’t notice this the first time, on the right when one of the panel flips over it reveals the objects inside that didn’t flip with it. And these are those “cookie” shapes you are trying to deal with..

    And while I’m looking again… it was bugging me that after all that glossy reflective work the animation was still clunky with very few eases. I think now they have actually used point level animation (PLA) to alter the geometry – so they are editing the position of the points directly and setting key frames. You can’t do f-curves with PLA – out of the box anyway. So I’ll bet they didn’t l know how either. But that kind of proves that it’s geometry moving around and not textures. If it was textures they probably would have used easing since thats the default keyframe setting with cinema.

    yeah PLA would be a lot easier to keep all the edges together, and it’s definitely objects for the circles at least take a look at the blue and yellow dots on the orange rectangle, when that rectangle flips to show it’s yellow side the dots don’t move with it

    But then (this has turned into a regular Law and Order episode), the single yellow circle “surfaces” and the reflection on the blue surround changes – I don’t think that would have happened if an object just pushed through the surface – so some of this might be displacement maps too.

    Dear Steve and Brian,

    First of all, I want to thank you for all your help!

    I would like just to keep the Law and Order episode a little longer.

    You can see that the sphere in the top right is indeed a hemisphere or some “3D” object.

    I was thinking if the yellow dot/ circle was made with a simple disc (that is the same Y,X,Z position of the rectangle shape) and with some keyframes was animated to expand is size?

    And the same with the 3 little circles that appear, with a display (?) tag?

    I dont think they need a display tag (but it couldn’t hurt- animate the visibility – btw, the animation of this attribute doesn’t show in the view port but will show properly when rendered – in the viewport it just sort of pops on when the value is >0)

    Yes you could use a cylinder (not a disk) and then fillet the caps to get that rounded lozenge look.

    You can just hide the circles (or flatted spheres or lathed arcs or filleted cylinders ) inside the cubes and then scale them or move them in the y until they poke through the amount you want when you want. You should child these inner objects to the outer parents so that you don’t get the issue that is visible in the reference animation. That way when the parents rotate they will carry the children with them.
    When you nestle an object inside a parent you can easily center the child on the parent just by zeroing out the childs position and rotation values.

    I wouldn’t worry about my last comment about the displacement map, it more a point of interest – there’s no need for the displacement, a hidden object inside will give you the nearly the same result and with a lot less render time. I was just interested in the kind of care that was taken in some aspects of this animation and then the lack of care in others.

    Let us know if you are going to use PLA as there is a trick that will allow you to use easing on the motion.
