    Hi there,

Please see attached screen shot. I’m new to C4D and I’m trying to create a simple characters eyes. I have used a sphere and created my material for the eyeball. I just can’t get the symmetry to work properly.
First of all, the eyes are the wrong way and need to be side by side. I have tried changing the other mirror plane options and nothing changes. the other issue is that the material is not displaying the same on the other eyeball.

    Can anyone please advise?

    Thanks in advance

    Scott

try putting a sphere in at world center with your eye texture on so the eye faces along the Z axis. Put in a Symmetry and drop the eye in it. Move the eye (not the symmetry) left or right. That’s how it should work. You can move/rotate later.

Thanks for the response Brian. Forgive my lack of knowledge but how do I put the object at world centre?
Do you know of any tutorials to help me understand this?

    Thanks for your time

world center is X, Y and Z positions = 0 – that’s where the sphere would appear by default as soon as you make so (unless you went into the Preferences/Interface and changed Create New Object At View Center – but I assume you didn’t do that).

There are number of tools in C4D which assume Z axis alignment (Extrude is one) – they can be changed but it’s easiest to work with it that way and move it afterward. Your image is looking down the X axis and the symmetry is up/down (XZ) rather than the default ZY

    Hi Brian,

Thanks for clarifying. I’ve just gone in and created another project and left everything as default. Please see screen shot.
I have added the sphere and put it into a symmetry object but it doesn’t seem to be doing anything?

Can you shed any light on this?

    Thanks

    Scott

because the sphere is in the center (and so is the symmetry line) you have two spheres in the center. Just select the sphere (in the OM under the Symmetry) and move it to the right (or left)

    Thanks Brian, sorted!
I just expected the symmetry to be automatically positioned apart. I have a lot to learn!

Still can’t get the materials to work though. There doesn’t appear to be a way of setting the materials for each eye independently so I’ve decided to just create 2 separate eyes and put them into a null object which seems a lot easier!

Thanks again for your time 🙂
