Spotlight with a custom shape
What I’m trying to figure out is how to get visible light that emits like a spotlight but in a custom shape(a letter). I have tried an area light which gives the light the shape of the letter but it doesn’t emit the same as a spotlight and the light isn’t visible. I also tried creating a transparent PNG of the letter in Photoshop, making it a material and adding it to the spotlight and it did not change the shape of the spotlight into the letter but I’m not sure I was doing that right.
This is what I’m trying to do only I want the shape of the spotlight to be of the letter behind it. Which means also not emitting from the hole in the middle of the letter either.
The scene is going to be animated and I’d rather not fake it in After Effects. Any help of how to do this would be appreciated.

Use whichever type of spot you want, but set Visible Light to “Inverse Volumetric.”

Thanks this works for the effect I’m looking for but in my actual scene there is no 3d text as I want this light emitting from letters painted onto a box.
Is there someway I can put 3D text in front of the spotlight and not have the 3D text show up in the render but still have the light react to it. Sorry I’m still learning C4D so not great at problem solving things right now.

add a Compositing tag to the letters and uncheck Seen By Camera (leave the rest alone)
