  Thick varnished look

  Hi

  I am trying to model a wooden box with a very thick shiny coat of varnish
  I am still fairly new to C4D, so please pardon my ignorance
  But how do I accomplish this? Do I use a Shader? Can you add “layers” to your materials?

  There’s a layer shader that you can use in any material channel. It works similar to PS layers.
