Does anyone have any tips or tutorials on how to achieve a classic 80s looking effect like the ones below? I know that most of them were animated by hand and therefore more organic looking, so we want to try to mimic that as best as possible.

We have a short kids movie about time travel and are looking to create some FX that would be a combination of sort of the Quantum Leap transport and the Weird Science lighting bolts traveling across the body type of shot (see samples below).

The movie was captured in 4k on the RED and we have shots with the actors and clean background plates to make an easy dissolve of them disappearing. We’re using AE CS3 and we have most of the Trapcode and Sapphire plug-ins. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

take a lookinto the tutorials from Andrew Kramer, Aaron Rabinowitz, Maltaanon, etc.

I´m sure you´ll get the results.

The Typo stuff isn´t that complicated.
As for the second youtube link, you´ll ned Cinema 4D or equivalent.

If you have e.g. Trapcode “Shine” and “Starglow” you´ll be near.

Oversaturated colors, glowing edges and an appropriate scene (wood paneling, period clothing, wild hair, etc) will help sell the effect.
