I am using a 1080i HDV (Canon XH A1)@60i and I want to know what is the best format to re-encode into using AFTER EFFECTS. I am upconverting it to 1920×1080, and I want to preserve as much quality as possible, as well as to have stream that is better than the mpeg2 transport for editing.

    thanks in advance!

[Dave LaRonde] “Got a capture card that will control your camera for capture, accept your camera’s HDMI output and capture in a lossless codec? If you do, you’re all set!”

We just invested in a Canon XH A1, and there’s no budget money for a capture card. So, if you can’t buy one, what would you recommend? I, too, am trying to find the ideal workflow with this camera.

I’m shooting 24f, but the only profile to capture with inside Premiere is at 23.976 interlaced. Should I be doing anything to the footage before editing or using in AE?

That’s an interesting stock answer, since I have run into no problems using the footage captured from the Canon thru firewire. No problems at all. I’m just hoping to find the “right” way to do it to get the best quality I can.

I guess I should be shooting in 60i then?

I agree with you, in theory. But I can’t put the toothpaste back in the bottle. All of a sudden the decision was made to buy a camera and poof – my boss bought this one. I am now stuck with it and trying to work it to the best of its ability.

Like I said, no problems so far. Looks great, captures in Premiere, edits in AE.

I’m just hoping to workflow it the best way possible.
