I have a potential client that would like me to model an object in C4D that is going to be manufactured in the end using some kind of CAD software. I would assume I could just model as usual in C4D and then export the file as a DXF?

Has anyone done something like this before, any tips or suggestions?

    Thanks.

Its pretty much the same. The export is dependent on what the CAD program is using.

You can some pretty strange results if you are using subdividers like hyper nurbs or clothnurbs …. so make it all editable or model “hard”.

Also a few times I have needed to triangulate the mesh before exporting.

I guess I’ve been doing it “right” all along. For some reason though, when I open the exported DXF file back into C4D my model looks a lot more “jagged” than before.

Do you know of any way around this?

I modeled with hypernurbs and such, but did make the objects editable before exporting.

I dont have a lot of experience with DXF so I cant offer any direct advice.
I generally go via Rhino so I am using 3dm files.

Sounds like a phong tag issue.
Although I’m not familiar with DFX file format, I have experienced what you describe when importing models from other programs.
