Burning Embers
Hey Guys,
Long time listener, first time caller:) I’ve gotten so much amazing help from people over the years on this site and finally have an issue I just can’t seem to solve. I am creating a shot of a vampire burning into ash, not unlike the shot at the end of 30 Days of Night (SPOILER ALERT!!!!) where Josh Hartnett turns to ash. Clearly, I can’t do anything of that level on my own.(It happens at 3:18 in this youtube vid; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_i5uLQQrkE)
What I am doing is using the technique from the videocopilot tutorial from andrew kramer for the healing wound, (https://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/the_healer/) reversing that and having the skin breaking into ash.
What I need help on is I’d like to have burning embers rising up past the camera in the foreground, as if the subject’s body is burning from the sun while the face turns to ash. Does anyone have an interesting way to do this that looks photorealistic? Is there some stock footage I should be using to avoid the hassle of more AEFX work? I’ve got a pretty advanced intermediate understanding of after effects and willing to try something at any level of difficulty, just need to be nudged in the right direction.

Not sure if you tried this but you might want to try Trapcode Particular. If you visit the site go to the gallery section and find Pierre Michele’s “Firefly” you will see the same effect I think that you are trying to achieve. He also give a little information on how to create the embers. Hope that this helps.
