  • Texturing a pill

Posted by Frank Ruggiero on May 13, 2011 at 9:43 pm

    Hi C4D Experts,

I am attempting to texture a pill shape object. Now the jpeg texture that I am using pinches at the ends (the poles) of the pill when I use cylindrical texturing.

The pinching seems to be alleviated when I change to cubic texturing and scale out the texture.

Is that the way I should be doing it?

    Does this make sense?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey Frank,
Is it possible to see the jpeg?

    Sure Craig,

    Thank you.

    Here it is.

Can you link the actual texture for download? ( I’m thinking as I type this, is there a reason you need to use a texture at all?)

    Sure.

I made this a tileable texture in photoshop.

I think using a texture of a real image would make my object look realistic. I also used the image as a bump map which was giving me some nice results. (Though the bump map is off in the example I uploaded).

But here is the actual texture.

I had to shrink it down for upload.

    Thanks again.

To really get this right with your texture you would have to do some custom UV mapping. Not an easy task.

My suggestion would be to try and make the texture using combined noise shaders with the noise set to use texture space. That way they will map correctly when the texture tag is set to UVW mode.

    Frank,

This is exactly what I was thinking earlier with regards to wondering why you needed to use the jpeg. I think you can get very close with a shader. Good luck!

    Thanks everyone.
I had no idea that it was not easy to texture a shape like that. I thought the program would adjust the texture to avoid pinching. Probably best to make a texture like you suggested.
    Thank you.

When you think about it, it’s just not physically possible to map a shape like that without some distortion and/or seams. A good way to think about it is to imagine wrapping a gift in the shape of your object. If you couldn’t do it without cutting or folding the wrapping paper then it won’t be possible to UV map it without seams or distortion. Usually it’s tradeoff between the two, i.e., how much distortion you can live with, and if you can’t accept much distortion, can you hide the seams.
