  • curved top, straight sides spline

Posted by Jason Boos on May 3, 2011 at 4:42 pm

Hi, I’m trying to create a spline with a curved top and a straight bottom, as well as sides, to be later used on a Extrude nurbs to create a window opening.

The overall size is to be 400 x 600, with an arch height of 100.

I tried creating a rectangle, then splitting the top alone, but the midpoint snap is useless.

I even tried creating it using Speedmud, but that a whole lot of mess in itself (their arch function does not allow for vertical height).

Can anybody please advise as to what I am doing wrong?

    Thanks in advance.

make a square bezier, convert to spline, use add point tool to add the middle point on the top side. Then convert that point to soft interpolation, then switch to the Move tool and you’ll be able to drag out the bezier handles.

The bezier editing tools are under the structure menu.

I’m only half the thing I say I am, the other half are me.

1 – if i am already creating a square bezier (which is already a spline), what do u mean by “convert to spline”?

2 – When I try to add a point on the midpoint (note that midpoint snapping is on), it does not snap correctly on the middle.

when you make a square bezier it’s not an editable spline until you hit the “C” key or convert to editable object. After you have done this go into point selection mode and use the “add point tool” switch views to front, and add your point. If it’s not right in the middle, make sure that point is active and move it to the middle using the viewport grid. once in the middle, move point up to your liking. The convert that point to soft interpolation and drag out handles to get your desired curve.

so in a nutshell, if I want to get the middle snap, I have to ensure that the edges are lined with the viewport grid?

Geesh, in autocad the snap settings are so much simpler!

when you have the add point tool selected enable snapping and check the box that says “mid point” and maybe spline too. I checked mid point and it worked for me. and it was on 2.5D. I think 2D works too.

Do u need to have the edge tool selected?

    for what?

To get the midpoint when using the “add point” tool.

I seem to only be able to drop an extra point when the “point” tool is selected.

you need to be in point mode, and then have the “add point” tool to add a point.

in addition to Add Point, in point mode you can use the knife tool with midpoint snapping on, you could also select the two points on either side of that top spline section and do a Subdivide with Subdivisions set to 1.
