  • Lights won’t work in after effects

    Hey guys,

Every time I add a light (any kind), I can never get it to work. I see the symbol for the light, I can move it around – but it will not emanate on anything, whatsoever. I have changed values for everything on the light, but it won;t do anything. Is there a misplaced file somewhere? What to do? Thanks!

Are you sure that your other layers are 3D layers? Lights don’t effect 2D layers.

Yes to all of that but you might also try opening the After Effects manual now that you are diving into 3D. You are in for some real surprises among the delights. Working in three dimensions is 3 times more complicated than 2D and your comps will take 3 times as long to preview and 9 times as long to render.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

I got the same problem. Created a light, spotlight, but the whole screen turns black and I only see the 3D light gadget (x,y,z axis). All my other layers disappear.

Only in ‘Ambient light’ where the rest of the other photos/layers appear.

    – I am using CS5.5
    – Draft 3d disabled.
    – 76 photos (1200 x 800px)
    – No videos
    – 1/3 playback resolution

I see the tutorials where the creator makes it look so easy. Create new spotlight, and the scene gets illuminated accordingly. I did the exact same thing and everything blacks out.

Would appreciate any advice for this AE noob? many thanks.

Did this not get solved? Having a similar problem as this person is. My layers are set to accept light, my light set to cast shadow. However, I don’t see the light. I can remove all lights from the scene and still see everything. I know there’s probably some simple view option or setting to fix this, but can’t for the life of me figure it out. Anyone?
