  • Which is the best reasonably-priced graphics card for R12?

I have made a commitment to, and major investment in, a program I really believe to be at the cutting edge of motion graphics today; but the move from C4D 11 to 12 has been a bumpy road indeed. My latest incompatibility is my graphics card. I use an NVidia GeForce 7600GT but like to hear suggestions from R12 owners on OpenGL 3.1-compliant cards that you would personally recommend. I went way out on a limb to get the Broadcast R12 version and I’d like to not have to ante up for very much more. When I first installed the program my card seemed to work just fine but when I tested it in Cinema it said it was borderline and that I should update the driver. But when I did that the program got hung up and wouldn’t render even the main Perspective viewport. Any tips would be appreciated.

You basically have a choice between an ATI based card or an nVidia based card. Of the two, ATI’s generally offer more bang for the buck BUT they are also plagued with driver issues. For that reason I’d recommend an nVidia-based card. Depends on your price range of course, but something like this relatively inexpensive and plenty powerful: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121393

Personally I have an nVidia GTX260 card and it’s been flawless.

Thanks so much for the tip, Adam. My system is a Core2Duo with 2GB of RAM and R11 has been performing like a dream. I just seemed to run into a brick wall when it comes to getting 12 up to speed, but I really don’t have any money left to turn around and upgrade my whole system just for one program. Anyway, I’ll definitely go with the NVidia card you recommended and look forward to producing some great stuff, thanks to Cinema 4D!

I take it you’re both talking about graphics cards for Windows systems?

I’m running R12 on a 2008 Mac Pro (2 x 3 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) with the stock ATI Radeon 2600. That card’s performance seems so-so. Unfortunately, graphics card performance for 3D on the Mac has always been mediocre.

Yeah, I was talking PC — hopefully Ron was too. 😉

I think graphics performance has caught up on the Mac side. Unfortunately you’re somewhat limited in your choice of cards and drivers.

    Yes, I’m on a PC.

I’d be willing to drop maybe $1000 on a Mac graphics card if I was assured of speedy performance comparable to a middle-high end PC graphics card, but my research indicates that even the $1500 nVidia Quadro FX 4800 performs poorly for professional 3D work (due to crappy Mac drivers), barely outpacing a much cheaper gaming card.

Quadro doesn’t do much for C4D regardless of drivers say the experts. Probably you will do much better getting an ATI 5870.

Well, I’ve upgraded my graphics card setup to what you had suggested (the GeForce GTS450) but I’m still getting the same result when I open up C4D R12. The interface will open but the Perspective View window is only flat gray and the 3D grid is missing. This happened of course when I installed the updated graphics card driver. When I first installed Cinema the program opened up like it’s supposed to. It looks like the trouble could be in the program itself. I wonder if I should re-install C4D? Do you have any suggestions?

Go to project settings. Untick ‘Linear workflow’ and you should be set. I had the sa\me problem and almost bought an expensive graphics card to solve the issue.
