    Hello everyone,

I followed a tutorial online last night for using GI and AO and when I rendered the scene, my cpu temp spiked to 219 degrees and the fans were around 6200 rpm. When I turn off either GI or AO, the cpu temp is around 100 degrees, fans around 3000 rpm. I’m new to using GI and AO and am wondering if there is something in settings I should check. I imagine/hope there is a way to use this stuff without killing my laptop. Thanks everyone.

    Best,
    Craig

What type of scene is it? Still or animation? If it’s an animation, is it just camera movign or are there moving objects?

It’s a cloner object dropping a few cubes onto a plane. However, if I render out a still frame, the cpu still spikes.

The only thing I can think of is that you could disable AO and in the GI>Irradiance cache tab, check the “prepass only” box. When you render, it will generate the GI cache file. Then enable AO and set GI to load the previously calculated cache file. That way it shouldn’t have to calculate both things at once.

Something else you might try is, instead of using AO, enable “Details Enhancement” in the GI settings. This performs a similar effect to AO but it’s much faster and hopefully less cpu intensive.

Generally speaking AO is used to fake global illumination, so unless you’re having a specific problem it’s best to avoid using them together.
