  bake a camera projected material onto an object

  Is there a way to bake a CAMERA PROJECTED material onto an object so that it can be broken apart and the material stays attached?

  Yes, just right-click on the texture tag and select, “Generate UVW Coordinates”. It only works for editable geometry.
