  There isnt anyway to choose what color you want a new layer to be is there? And does anyone else find it a little annoying that C4D chooses colors that are only slightly visibly different in value than layers you already have defined?

  Sure, you can change the color to whatever you want. Just double-click the color chip in the layer manager.
