I’ve just started using Cinema version 11 on my Mac, and I need to make a terrain with a grayscale map, so I’m using the Relief object. I used the Relief object many times in previous versions of Cinema and it seems to me that there was no limit to the number of segments you could put in to make the detail finer. But in version 11 I can’t go past 1000 segments in either direction. Is this something new, and is there a way to get more segments at all? I know that I used to use up to 1400 segments for some terrains that I made of the ocean floor, and I’d like to do that with this one, but there’s this limit.

    thanks,
    Jack

10.5 has a limit of 4000, sorry don’t know a solution (other than displacement of a plane)

After trying several different objects (cube, plane) I’ve found that the limit for segments seems to be 1000 no matter what. I wish there was a higher limit. I tried displacement on a plane, but can’t get past the 1000 segment limit to get better detail. Maybe I’ll contact Maxon and see what they say.

if you use sub-poly displacement you can set higher subdivisions there instead having to set higher segments (or you can toss it in a HyperNurb)

    Thanks, Brian, I’ll give sub-poly a try.

Sub-poly is definitely the way to go. The relief object is a relic from earlier days kept in mainly for compatibility with old files.

Is there a way to turn a sub-polygon displaced object into geometry? I tried Current state to object, and got a cube instead of an object that looked like the displaced object render. I’d like to bring it into BodyPaint and paint on the geometry, but I can’t see it. Alternatively, is there a way to see the displaced geometry in BodyPaint (I’m new to BodyPaint, so I don’t really know what I’m doing there yet)?

    thanks,
    Jack

if you have MoGraph can use the Displace Deformer but you’d have to drop the sub poly and use a HyperNurb to do the extra subdivision

Thanks, Brian. I do have MoGraph, so I’ll give that a try.
