Doing a book tutorial and I can’t chamfer an edge…
Hey all… I am brand new to Cinema 4D and I am teaching myself from the “Cinema4D R10 Handbook” by Anson Call…
I am on the first tutorial… this is going to make me sound like a ridiculous n00b… they are having me create a spline and then taking three points and applying a chamfer to them…
This is what the book said, and I have followed it exactly:
Step 7. Make sure you have the Points tool selected. With the Live Selection tool, select points 4,5, and 6. Hold the Shift Key down if necessary.
Step 8. From the main menu, select Structure> Edit Spline> Chamfer, or press V and then choose Edit Spline> Chamfer from the pop up menu. Click and drag (rom left to right, you amy have to drag a lot) in the Front videw to round these corners. Do not click on any axis handles.

Keep in mind I am TOTALLY new… like.. this is my very first tutorial… I mainly work in After Effects and Zaxwerks ProAnimator… but I think I really need to learn a 3D app.
Any help is greatly appreciated… thanks…

I don’t understand … you can’t find the command or you found it and it isn’t doing anything? FYI, the tool works in one of two ways: 1) you can click/drag in the editor window to create the chamfer, or you can select a radius in the tool properties and hit the “Apply” button.

Okay, now I get it… I thought that since Realtime Update was checked, if i dragged the radius up or down, it would show me, but the book didn’t tell me that I needed to hit the apply button…
Thanks so much Adam… I’m sure your gonna be getting a lot more of these ridiculous questions from me… hahaha

Hello!
I have exactly the same problem – complete and utter newbie to 3D, first attempt with a 3D program, and using the same book. Can’t make it past this first tutorial because no matter what I do, this chamfer thing does NOTHING! I have read the above replies, and think I have found the relevant apply button. It can only be pressed if I unselect the Realtime Update button – but nothing happens. Is this a facility that is disabled in the demo version? (Surely not). It must be something very simple, I suppose …..
Is there some other way to smooth the edges of a spline?

usually the only time the Apply button is greyed out is after the tool has been used already. Perhaps you used it with the Radius set to zero? That would look like nothing happened. Either click New Transform and make sure the Radius is larger than zero when you press Apply – or try the interactive mode, with some (or all) of the points of the spline selected, select the Chamfer tool (the way the book describes) then click in the same window part that contains the spline and left-click-drag left to right to get a chamfer that way.
If you aren’t sure if you have points selected or what parts of the interface I’m talking about etc. download the help files from Maxon’s Downloads/Documentation page and install it (once you have the file go to the Help menu in C4D, select Manual Install and choose the Help file you downloaded (don’t unzip it, C4D will do that)) and check out the first few sections under the Cinema4D part – Usage, Views and Viewports etc. etc. -
oop, demo version. The documentation is through online update, I think…
