Greetings, I’m brand new to 3d and C4D and looking to experiment with it’s use for creating illustrative work for print. Looking for simplistic wireframes for background buildings, cars etc (more along the lines of marketing material vs technically accurate models. Any guidance appreciated!

You can use any model you can find and apply special edge/ wireframe shaders to it, e.g. by using Sketch&Toon. If you search Turbosquid 0r 3D02 you can find a lot of stuff. in your particular case you should look for game models which are pretty low-res. You can also use subdivision models and lower their HyperNURBS values or turn off the HN object entirely. It really depneds on what you need for a specific project.
