  • Noob Question regarding rendering…

Posted by Justin Rank on December 17, 2006 at 10:16 pm

I just picked up C4D on Saturday and have one of the most basic questions.

How do I render out to .avi? I’ve set up my render settings as .avi uncompressed w/alpha, but I can’t find a way to actually record the animation into an .avi

    Sorry for the noob question….

Probably what you’re missing is that you have to change the default Output>Current Frame to Output>All Frames (or however many you want to render). Then render to the Picture Viewer rather than the Editor window (middle render icon).

I dug up an old post and read up on rendering. It worked, but C4D gives me both an .avi without an alpha and a matte image sequence. I brought the image sequence and .avi into After Effects and used the sequence as a matte for the alpha channel.

Hope that’s the way to do it unless there’s a better way…

If you’re using AE you should use the “Compositing Project File” option in the render>save dialogue. That will create a file that’s read by the C4D>AE plugin (found in your Maxon\Exchange Plugins folder). When you open that file in AE, the plugin will automatically import all of your footage, cameras, and lights, and place them in appropriate folders. Especially handy if you’re using multi-pass rendering.
