    hey there-
    so i’ve got these fairly dense scenes, and i’m rendering with decently high anti-aliasing settings…
    however, even still, the very thin shadows in my scenes are turning into ugly jagged or dotted lines.

    take a look at the telephone wire shadows crossing the street and sidewalk here for an example:

    is there a way to independently make my shadow anti-aliasing higher without making the entire render’s aa higher (and thus give me a 4 day render for one frame? keep in mind this is an animation, and i have to finish at SOME point..).

    or am i looking at the problem the wrong way? any other work-arounds?
    any help appreciated!

    Can’t see your picture, but anyways. You can use the compositing tag to override AA settings for each object separately. If your wires are raeally thin, that’s not going to solve your problem, so your only option would be to make them that tiny bit thicker. Basically everything in your scene that is thinner than 2 pixels will cause this problem as even the most sophisticated AA algorithm needs some pixels/ are to work with. As an alternative you can use Scene Motion Blur, but of course it’s not going to do anything if neither your cables nor your camera move (plus it will increase render times).

    was fearing that…. but thanks! i suppose i could tell that wire not to cast shadows.

    hey, are they soft of raytraced shadows? If soft, maybe you could increase the shadow map size in the light properties to 1000. They propably are’nt soft, but maybe you could substitute one, also play with the other settings, like turn of shadow cone of the soft shadow, that will make it appear to be a hard ray traced one
