I’m in need of some guidance in the creation of a rice paper texture. I’m hoping to render a room with Shoji screens in it’s windows and am trying to create that look of diffused light through paper. I’ve made a silk embedded rice paper in photoshop, and plan to scan a better sample when I get a little further along. Been playing with the glass material on a 1/4″ thick wall. It takes some time to render and I haven’t been able to apply the paper to it as I’d like. There’s probably a better way to go about this and since I’m fairly new to the program I’m wide open to ideas. My 3d models come from various other programs and I confess to near noobian status, but I am a bit familiar with C4D’s primitives. I should also mention that I use HDRI for all my renders since I simply haven’t had the time to set up my own lighting. Any and all help is welcome and appreciated.

Check out the Backlight channel shader. Put that into the Luminance channel of your rice paper material and shadows cast on the backside of the paper show up on the frontside and where the light falls is lit up
