9.5 question: does ambient occlusion depend on a light dome?
Posted by Joe Carusoe on September 26, 2005 at 3:56 amthe sample scene with the demo includes a light dome, but AO shouldn’t depend on lighting…. it’s all about geometry.
when i take out the light dome and hit ‘apply to scene’ in the AO render settings, i get a black void. what gives?Joe Carusoe replied 20 years, 7 months ago 3 Members · 5 Replies -

September 26, 2005 at 5:16 amNo, AO has the ability to take the environment into account (for color information), but it doesn’t depend on it. I don’t have the sample scene so I don’t know how it’s set up.

September 26, 2005 at 2:48 pmI’m guessing you have a black scene because the light dome was used as the object in the new ability to make geometry a light source. Just add a light, or turn Auto light back on in render options.
But just start a new scene. Create a plane to be the floor, add 2 spheres side by side. In render settings, turn on AO scene option. Do a normal render. There you go, AO.

September 27, 2005 at 9:54 pmwell, i tried putting a sphere on a plane and using ‘apply to scene’ in AO, and i’m getting ambient occlusion that’s lit with an auto light.
true AO doesn’t use light at all. is there any way to do this, or is c4d’s AO dependent on light? -

One, you can use the AO shader in a material’s luminance, diffuse, and/or environment channel. Two, you can use the render tab option with “apply to scene” and “use sky environment” (requires sky dome). This will combine AO with scene lighting. Or three, you can render a separate AO pass wich will give you a pure AO render.
