  Paint and a background

  Hi guys,

  I’ve tried to search as it seems like a question which would be asked often, but I haven’t found an answer.

  I want to use the pain effect and the luma mask setting to mask out some stuff as the vector paint effect is not very responsive and doesn’t have pen pressure.

  Problem is, when i paint i can’t see the footage under it. Is there any way to target a specific layer?

  You may not be using the best tool for this job.. normally a mask should do the job (classic pen tool)
  in the case that what you’re doing is so intricate that you need to paint with say, a tablet, then knock yourself out; you could apply your paint effect onto your actual footage. just double click on it and paint away. if you’re rotoscoping, pay attention to the settings in your paint toolbox. you can adjust the frame duration if say, you wanted to make each brush stroke stay on screen for a specific amount of time. if you’re not rotoscoping, then set your duration to constant. have fun! : )

  Thanks for the reply, not exactly what I’m looking for though.

  As things go I actually had to paint something frame by frame.

  I have an element with transparent bg that i want to paint over while seeing my background plate. How do I enable it so that the bg plate is visible?

  Is there no way of doing this?

  Combustion has an option to select the background layer one wishes to see while painting, is there nothing similar?

  sorry it took so long to get back to you,
  hope you’re still with me though..
  if you have to see the background as well, just use vector paint and set your “composite paint” to “inverse matte”

  Hey,

  Thanks for the reply but Vector paint, as i mentioned in my post does not offer you the same flexible tools that paint does. It’s slow and cumbersome compared.
