Good for business? Now it’s Skype. A buddy’s client just had what in years past were traditional interviews shot all over the country by professional crews for the annual convention, done on Skype by the subjects themselves. The corporate office sent out instructions, in some cases they even sent out webcams to clip on. The talking heads will be on a 15″ video wall (ugh!). BTW, this is a Fortune 100 company.

Hey, if it’s “good enough” for Oprah…

Words cannot express the feelings I have in my heart, reading that.

Oops! Original poster here. I meant the Skype video will be on a FIFTEEN FOOT wide video wall, not 15″.

Cisco bought it without really knowing what to do with it. Very Gordon Gekko.

So many competitors, they could not keep up so they went out of business, how is that different than video services?

Staying in business is tough, especially now, cost pressures are enormous to do everything cheaper! Unfortunately my costs don’t go down just because a client wants a cheaper price. At some point they become a “liability” not a client, I am very happy to tell people to “do it themselves” I cannot compete with an idiot who does not care about my abilities, if they are just buying on price, they have to shop elsewhere.

Tell you what I wanna do… when the flip HD cams are getting blown out at insanely low prices, I’m going to buy like, a bucket full of them, 20 or more, when they become affordable, and arrange them on a flexible snake-like armature, and I’m finally going to do a bunch of those “bullet time” Matrix-like wrap-around 3-D frozen moment things. Just for fun.

I’m sorry to see the Flip go. It is a brilliantly-designed tool. I used a Flip last January to get a difficult angle for a nationally broadcast video, intercut with a Sony HD palmcorder, a GoPro, and XDCAM. The Flip’s angle was one of the best (and most-used), simply because it could fit in the most interesting place, and you don’t notice inferior video quality when the content is great.

On the other hand… using a Flip to replace a traditional video camera for a sit-down interview, when the viewer has lots of time to absorb every detail, seems silly. To people like us anyway.

otoh #2: I’ve noticed a disturbing trend, even in videos addressed to “people like us,” e.g. the endless NAB clips produced by various ezines, toward really crappy video quality. If we accept it, why shouldn’t our clients?
