  Aspect ratio question

  Hi
  I have a shot which I rendered out using quicktime PNG 1440×1080 with HDV 1080/DVCPRO HD 720(1.33) selected so that the video is widescreen. However when it is finished rendering in quicktime it is not widescreen, it is squashed in. The same happened with VLC and the video plays very stuttery.

  Why are these problems occuring?

  Quicktime usually isn’t capable of recognizing and properly displaying anamorphic pixel aspect ratios like an NLE and AE would. If you intend on outputting a file that you intend to watch on the computer, use 1920×1080 with square pixels.

  As for the stuttery video, possibility that the file you have created contains too much data for your system to display without dropping frames…such as too high of a bitrate.

  I would agree with Erik on these points. However, you shouldn’t just go for square pixels every time – non-square pixels are the norm for tv. QT player just can’t tell whether pixels are square or non-square so assumes they’re square. Your stuttering, as Erik suggests, is likely to be due to a high data rate. But only compress your video if you’re not going to work on it any more before delivery. For example, if you’re going to edit your clips together and render the final movie out, work with your high data rate footage. Re-compressing over and over will give you terrible final results.
