  • Help me with a Job Title Change

For 4 years I have had the titled “VIdeo Editor” at my job.

Well, my boss wants to change my title because I do a whole lot more than edit videos. And asked me to come up with some ideas. Was wondering if you all could offer suggestions.

I was thinking “Creative Director.” Does this fall into such a role or would something better be suited that would help me in the long term as I change employers too.

    Here’s what I do:

-Direct and edit a weekly news show that includes over the shoulder graphics
-Created the open, lower thirds, etc. look and feel for the news show
-Also edit, direct, and create graphics for other periodic videos we send out to members through email alerts
-Create all motion graphics for corporate videos
-Define the look and feel for all video graphics coming out of our department
-Work directly with clients to execute their visions visually (after the videotaping and script have been written by other people)
    -create graphics for conference slideshows
-create conference show opens – define look and feel and do all the work
-scan through tapes to find video clips that will work best for promotional videos
-research new ways to do things and software – dvds, compression, website design, etc.

what do you all think would be a good title for me?

Hmmmm…. if the boss is asking it should probably come with a raise too.

Your site looks corporate-focused but creative, do you need to play to that? How much interaction to you do directly with clients that a title would matter? I met a guy in Colorada at some live events that just seemed to know it all and was the go-to guy for everything. His card said “Important Guy”. It fit. For many years I was Creative Guy, that got attention and was memorable and had value.

I don’t think “Creative Director” fits here, they aren’t usually the ones doing the grunt work.

i think its more of i do more than just editing and to justify a pay increase they’d have to change my title. so what would I want it to be and what would help me later down the line when looking for new jobs. whats a better title to have to put on a resume as opposed to just “video editor”

i am that guy at work who knows it all and can do anything they need regarding design, videos, compression, websites, email, etc.

If you can have fun with it I’ve always liked Renaissance Man. If you need the biggie go for Director of Video Media. Titles really mean jack, have the skills and the reel (file?) and you’re good to go.

That is pretty much what I do for my company. I do not really have a “Title” per say, but my boss always introduces me as our “Resident Videologist”, “Doctor of Videology”, etc… Always gets a good laugh from everyone.

Creative Director generally is tied to the idea of an advertising guy that finds and assigns artists to projects he or she thinks of and then oversees, so I’m not sure that’s a relly accurate fit, although in general that job title can command a higher salary than video editor in some circles.

What about “Creative Media Specialist” or “Creative Media Supervisor”. Always nice to have “Supervisor” in the title, even if you’re not actually supervising anyone else but yourself.

nope. just graphics, editing, web design, all complete creative control.

im usually just given a script (and VO) or videoclips and said make something happen.

That used to be hell, but now I really love the creative freedom of clients that just dump some stuff and leave me to figure it out.

If you happen to have more knowledge in your field than anyone else in your area or department, you could try adding “consultant” to your title. consultants make more money right off the bat, especially if you are the company’s Creative Media Consultant…Or what about Creative Liaison Officer? Ah, Chief Media Creator!

All this talk makes me want to change my title from just plane “Owner” to Creative Media President or something like that! That’s right, I’m the C.M.P. of my own company! Oh Yeah!
